Waiting on Wednesday: Of Beast and Beauty by Stacey Jay

Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine
that spotlights upcoming releases that we can't wait to get our hands on.

This week I can't wait for:

Of Beast and Beauty
by Stacey Jay
Delacorte Press,  July 23, 2013

In the beginning was the darkness, and in the darkness was a girl, and in the girl was a secret...

In the domed city of Yuan, the blind Princess Isra, a Smooth Skin, is raised to be a human sacrifice whose death will ensure her city’s vitality. In the desert outside Yuan, Gem, a mutant beast, fights to save his people, the Monstrous, from starvation. Neither dreams that together, they could return balance to both their worlds.

Isra wants to help the city’s Banished people, second-class citizens despised for possessing Monstrous traits. But after she enlists the aid of her prisoner, Gem, who has been captured while trying to steal Yuan’s enchanted roses, she begins to care for him, and to question everything she has been brought up to believe.

As secrets are revealed and Isra’s sight, which vanished during her childhood, returned, Isra will have to choose between duty to her people and the beast she has come to love. (From Goodreads)

Recently, I've been obsessed with Beauty and the Beast retellings. In fact just finished Beauty by Robin McKinley. I think this all stems from the fact that my daughter has been really into Disney's Beauty and the Beast, and has been listening to the soundtrack and begging for the movie non stop. But it's quickly becoming one of my favorite fairy tales.

BONUS: Another upcoming Beauty and the Beast adaptation I'm DYING to read:

by Rosamund Hodge
Balzar + Bray, January 2014

What's your favorite Beauty and the Beast adaptation?

What are you waiting on this Wednesday?

  2. LOVING all of the Beauty & the Beast retellings lately. I think I'm more excited about Cruel Beauty, but both are on my TBR. Glad I'm not the only one with Disney's version stuck on repeat in my house. My 5yo daughter watches it incessantly. :)

  3. I haven't had much luck with Stacey Jay's Romeo and Juliet retelling, so I'm not sure if I want to give this a try. But I love beauty and beast, it's my fave! I guess I'll just wait for the reviews to judge. Thanks for sharing it :)

  8. Yay for Beauty and the Beast retellings! This was my WoW a few weeks ago. I've since read an interview of Stacey Jay and it sounds like she's got some really interesting ideas for this, like flipping around certain tropes associated with beauty and beastliness. I can't wait to read it!
