Top Ten Books On My Fall TBR List

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and Bookish

My fall To Be Read (TBR) list mostly consists of two types of books: 1) First books in series. 2) Second books in series. I'm always nervous about #2, but I have high hopes for this grouping! Although I don't list any contemporaries here, I'll definitely read some of those as well.

Group 1 are first books:

1. Monstrous Beauty by Elizabeth Fama
A mermaid story that has also been described as mature, literary and complex? Sign me up. Plus it releases today!
2. The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
After The Scorpio Races, I will read anything this author writes. I love the way she builds her characters. Yay for a new series!

3. Valkyrie Rising by Ingrid Paulson
I love mythology, but don't know a lot about Norse myths. Valkyrie are supposed to be warrior women, and I can't wait to find out more about them!

4. Silver by Talia Vance
I have recently become fascinated by Celtic myths. I can't wait to read a book based on them. Plus it's Mature YA/New Adult. That's a win for me.

5. The Assassin's Curse by Cassandra Rose Clark
Pirates, assassins and curses. Plus I love the cover. I'm excited.

Group 2 are sequels:
I typically dread second books in series. But I can't wait for these.

6. Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor
I don't think I could say enough about how much I love this author's beautiful prose. Plus the world she created - encompassing a unique angel and demon mythology - is astounding. I am looking forward to entering it again.

7. The Evolution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
I love the covers in this series. Is Mara saving Noah this time? What does the picture mean for the book? Book 1 gave me tons to think about, and I can't wait to continue Mara's story. Plus Noah Shaw!

8. The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan
I have an inappropriate amount of love for Percy Jackson. I hope Rick Riordan keeps writing about him forever. (Actually, I do hope he gets some peace some day, but for now - bring on the new gods!). Also, I realize that this is actually the 3rd or 8th book in the series. BUT it still feels like a middle book. So there.

9. Destroy Me - by Tahereh Mafi
Okay, what I really want to read is Unravel Me, which doesn't release until early 2013. But this is the next best thing. I know it isn't a proper book, but I can't wait to find out what Warner's been up to lately.

Finally, a final in a series:

10. Quintana of Charyn by Melina Marchetta
After Finnkin and Froi, I cannot wait for the conclusion of the Lumatere Chronicles. This book actually doesn't release in the US until March. But I'm determined to obtain a copy when it comes out in Australia this fall. Even if I have to fly there to get it. I cannot say this enough: I'm in love with Melina Marchetta's writing and her characters.

Bonus : Established books/series I plan to read
1. Son of the Shadows and Child of the Prophecy by Juliet Marillier (Sevenwaters 2&3)
2. The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
3. Alice in Zombieland by Gena Showalter (Why is this book in this section? I ran out of numbers above but wanted to mention it because it sounds awesome, that's why.)

What fall releases are you most excited about?

  1. I'm really looking forward to The Raven Boys as I thought the Scorpio Races was a great read. Great list, I'll be keeping an eye out for most of these but not the mermaid book. Just can't get into mermaid stories :)

    1. HA! I've loved mermaids since the Little Mermaid. But this one is supposed to be different/MORE than just a mermaid story. The Scorpio Races is probably one of my favorite books of all time, so I have high hopes for The Raven Boys, though I'm going to try not to compare them at all!

  2. I'm still not sure if I'll read The Raven Boys. Going to check out some reviews first! Great list!

    1. The good/bad thing about The Raven Boys, is that it's part of a 4 part series. There will be many books to decide if you like the story arc, but that's also a lot of waiting. However, I sometimes I prefer to wait and read a book if it is part of a series, because I like to read them closer together. Though often I just can't wait that long!

  3. Monstrous Beauty is seriously so good. I can't stop talking about it! Read it soon so we can talk. I can't tell you how excited for Days and Evolution I am. Seriously, I want them now.

    1. YAY! I can't wait to get my hands on Monstrous Beauty! I will read it as soon as possible - I think I'm first on the library's list. So it just depends on when they receive the book and process it. I'll let you know. And it's definitely difficult to wait for some of these upcoming books. I've been avoiding reading the first chapter for Evolution online, because I KNOW it will be intense and will make the waiting much harder!

  4. YES Monstrous Beauty. YES YES YES.
Days of Blood & Starlight - I can't even coherently talk about the love I have for Laini Taylor's writing. I just can't.

THE NAME OF THE WIND!!! THE NAME OF THE WIND!!!

I love your list so hard.

    1. I'm starting to get anxious to get to reading all of these. Thankfully they don't all come out at the same time or I'd have a full on panic attack. I keep telling myself to calm down and take them one at a time. The Name of the Wind, I know! Maybe I'll read it slowly like you did. Otherwise, with the heftiness of it, I might have to block off an entire week or so.

  5. Oh thanks for the heads-up about Destroy Me, I definitely want to read that!

Love the cover of The Assassin's Curse, sounds wonderful too. I really want to read The Scorpio Races, I've heard such great things about it.

I'm so excited about Days of Blood and Starlight!! Can't wait!!!

The Name of the Wind is one of my favourite books, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

    1. Yes. Warner is a great villain. I can't wait to get inside his head and see what's going on. Thankfully we get that, or else it would be torture to wait until January for Unravel Me.

The Scorpio Races is seriously one of my favorite books of all time. It is so so good. I hope you read it.

YAY for another vote for The Name of the Wind! I keep hearing excellent things about that one.

  6. Unravel Me is just as phenomenal as Shatter Me. Looking forward to Destroy Me and Alice in Zombieland among others on your list!

    1. OH I am excited to hear this news. And a little jealous as well that you've read it. I love the way Tahereh Mafi writes, can't wait to get back into Juliet's world.

Oh and Alice and Zombieland sounds like so much fun. If anyone can handle Zombies, it's Alice!

    2. I agree. Tahereh Mafi is truly one of my favorite ("new") writers. What a talent.

  7. QUINTANA! I need to find that, even though I'm in the US! I can't wait for The Raven Boys(I loooved TSR too!), DoBS, or Valkyrie Rising either. I loved The Assassin's Curse and I hope you find the time to read all these amazing novels! Wonderful Top Ten! :)

    1. I know! I'm hoping that we'll be able to get Quintana from Fishpond or maybe even the Book Depository. Otherwise, I don't know what I'm going to do. Melina Marchetta released the prologue online this weekend and after reading that I'm even MORE eager for the book. Oh YAY that you loved The Assassin's Curse. It looks like a fun book with a great heroine.

  8. Valkyrie Rising sounds so awesome, I'm really looking forward to it, even though my knowledge on Norse mythology is patchy at best! I'm excited for The Raven Boys too, it's been ages since I read a book by Maggie.

  9. Your list ROCKS, Lauren! The Raven Boys is amazing! Hey want to pre-order it and get it signed and doodled by Maggie herself (you know her drawings are the BEST) here's the link: http://www.fountainbookstore.com/autograph-maggie

I just pre-ordered a hard copy even though I read the e-ARC. Got to have a hard copy of all of her books since she's one of my all time favorite authors:)

I have galley's of Silver and The Assassin's Curse waiting for me, you're right they both look amazing. Plus isn't that cover of The Assassin's Curse drop dead beautiful??

So Quintana should've been on my list, you know I love her as much as you, but I'm fearing I may not be able to read it until the US release unless a) Fishpond comes through or b) you actually DO fly to Australia and pick me up a copy:)

Great list, so glad to see you on Top Ten Tuesday!

    1. OH thanks for the link! I'm planning to go and see Maggie in September so hopefully she'll autograph it then. Though she'll probably not have time to doodle as well...tough choice!

I've got to figure out how to get myself some arcs - but then I worry that I'll have too many books to read at once and have less of a choice. We'll have to discuss that sometime.

I've been strategizing how to get Quintana. BUT I'm with you. Unless it becomes available here, I'm not sure how I'll get it.

      It's fun to be here!

  11. I have recently heard of another mermaid book coming out this next year that has gotten my attention. It's called Mythos. The book trailer is on youtube under Mythos offician book trailer. I just hope it isn't a letdown as excited as I am to read it.
