Waiting on Wednesday: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine
that spotlights upcoming releases we can't wait to read.

This week I can't wait for:

Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

Little, Brown and Company Books for Young Readers is part of the parent company Hachette. Along with LB Kids and Poppy, they publish about 135 books a year for children and teens. LBBYR  features their core list of picture books and hardcover and paperback fiction and nonfiction for middle grade and young adults.

I start shaking whenever I see this book! I'm dying to find out the conclusion of Karou and Akiva's journey.

Laini Taylor
April 17, 2014

By way of a staggering deception, Karou has taken control of the chimaera rebellion and is intent on steering its course away from dead-end vengeance. The future rests on her, if there can even be a future for the chimaera in war-ravaged Eretz.

Common enemy, common cause.

When Jael's brutal seraph army trespasses into the human world, the unthinkable becomes essential, and Karou and Akiva must ally their enemy armies against the threat. It is a twisted version of their long-ago dream, and they begin to hope that it might forge a way forward for their people.

And, perhaps, for themselves. Toward a new way of living, and maybe even love.

But there are bigger threats than Jael in the offing. A vicious queen is hunting Akiva, and, in the skies of Eretz ... something is happening. Massive stains are spreading like bruises from horizon to horizon; the great winged stormhunters are gathering as if summoned, ceaselessly circling, and a deep sense of wrong pervades the world.

What power can bruise the sky?

From the streets of Rome to the caves of the Kirin and beyond, humans, chimaera and seraphim will fight, strive, love, and die in an epic theater that transcends good and evil, right and wrong, friend and enemy.

At the very barriers of space and time, what do gods and monsters dream of? And does anything else matter?

I've seen this book listed a lot recently, but I finished The Diviners last night and it was amazing. Now I can't wait for book 2.

After a supernatural showdown with a serial killer, Evie O'Neill has outed herself as a Diviner. Now that the world knows of her ability to "read" objects, and therefore, read the past, she has become a media darling, earning the title, "America's Sweetheart Seer." But not everyone is so accepting of the Diviners' abilities...

Meanwhile, mysterious deaths have been turning up in the city, victims of an unknown sleeping sickness. Can the Diviners descend into the dreamworld and catch a killer?

YES! I love thief books. Add superpowers and I'm completely sold. I really hope this one is going to be a winner.

Pitched as X-Men meets Ocean's Eleven.

A group of underground high-class thieves with super powers become embroiled in a deadly race against the government to find the formula for the vaccine that gave them their powers.

Is it shallow that I just want to read this for the "tattooed harpoon boy?" Just kidding...mostly. Actually, this island culture with whalers and witches sounds really interesting.

Salt & Storm
By Kendall Kulper
September 2014

Sixteen-year-old Avery Roe wants only to take her rightful place as the witch of Prince Island, making the charms that keep the island’s whale men safe and prosperous at sea. But before she could learn how to control her power, her mother, the first Roe woman in centuries to turn her back on magic, stole Avery away from her grandmother. Avery must escape from her mother before her grandmother dies, taking with her the secrets of the Roes’ power.

When Avery awakens from a dream foretelling her own murder, she realizes time is running short—for her and for the people of her island, who, without the Roes, will lose their ships and the only life they know.

With the help of Tane, a tattooed harpoon boy from the Pacific Islands, Avery plots her escape from her mother and unravels the mysteries of her mother’s and grandmother’s pasts. Becoming a witch may prevent her murder and save her island from ruin, but Avery discovers it will also require a sacrifice she never expected—one she might not be able to make.

  15. Oh, I want to join in on the Laini Taylor love fest BUT I have yet to start the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series. *wah wah wah* My library only carries the sequel, so I need to purchase the first installment. At this point, I might as well just wait for the series to conclude, so I can own the entire trilogy. If they're as good as everyone says they are, I really can't go wrong. :)

Great picks, Lauren! I'm especially digging the concepts behind Salt & Storm!

  16. Dreams of Gods and Monsters...YESYESYESYES!!!! I cannot WAIT!! Also, adding Illusive to my TBR list, 'cause that also sounds awesome.

  17. I really enjoyed The Diviners so I'll definitely be reading the next one. Great picks! ~Pam

I did that one on audio and it was so fun! And thanks for bringing the other two to my attention...I'm definitely looking forward to that "tattooed harpoon boy", too! =)

  19. Welp, just added a couple of these to my TBR! X-Men meets Ocean's Eleven? Yes please! And now that Dreams of Gods and Monsters is coming out soon, I definitely need to check the series out!

  20. I'm very excited or Lair of Dreams!!! I still need to read the second Taylor book before I get to this new one, but I'm afraid to read it until this one is out.

  21. I've said it once, I'll say it again...I love how you do this feature! Illusive sounds fantastic!
