Six Degrees of Separation - Book Style (4) + GIVEAWAY

How is What Happens Next related to Days of Blood and Starlight

It's time for another six degrees of separation featuring some of the books I read in the last month. I've stuck to my no spoilers rule, so it's safe to read on even if you haven't read these books.

**Don't miss the giveaway at the bottom of this post for a chance to win
an ARC of Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi**

What Happens Next by Colleen Clayton and The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay feature insomniac girls who run at night to forget things that happened to them. Too bad they don't live near each other or else they could be running buddies.

The basic set up of The Sea of Tranquility and Heart's Blood by Juliet Marillier is the same, although the books go in very different directions and the stories are nothing alike. Both begin with a female protagonist who has run away from her past and in the process makes a different life for herself. Thankfully, the 'new life' also includes a guy. You don't want to miss either of them (the guys or the books).

In both Heart's Blood and The Queen of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner, characters learn how to write with their left hand and spend time practicing their handwriting. This may not seem significant, but it is.

My opinion of a specific character shifted drastically by the end of both The Queen of Attolia and Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi. Each time I wasn't sure it could be done, but was amazed by how much I've come to care for individuals I previously despised.

Unravel Me and Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor are both middle books in three-book-series that prove not all second books are slumps. In fact they can be as good (or better) than the first. Also, these stories have characters who can turn themselves invisible, which comes in handy when evading bad guys.

BONUS COMPARISONS

1) Ravens are a popular bird this year. Sapphire Blue by Kerstin Gier joins the four books from last month in including raven mythology.

2) Both Megan Whalen Turner's The Queen's Thief series and Jennifer Armentrout's Covenant series (I read Deity this month) draw heavily on Greek culture and mythology.

  1. Oh, you know I LOVE these posts, chica! My fave is the one about lefties learning to write with their right hands, that is a pretty cool connection!

  12. This is such a fun and clever idea for a book post! Love it!

I must admit I giggled at the whole "running partner thing." Hehe

And I appreciate the no spoilers, plus you're making me want to read all these books!

(And Ravens totally are big right now! Though they are a pretty cool bird in terms of their history and whatnot.)
