Top Ten Bookish Confessions

Top Ten Tuesday REWIND: Top Ten Bookish Confessions

I missed this week and I thought it was so much fun to see everyone else's confessions!

1.) I am horrible at keeping track of bookmarks. I take the marker out of my book put it down, and can never find it again. Even if I don't move from the spot I was reading.

2.) I read the entire Twilight saga in 4 days. I could not concentrate on anything else, and I LOVED the series. EVEN Breaking Dawn. But when I tried to reread the books, I discovered that Bella is the most annoying person ever. I know this series is the butt of so many jokes now. But it was really the beginning of my love affair with YA, and I'm not ashamed.

3.) I prefer to read series all together in one chuck, or as many books are released. I get panicky about leaving my characters in the middle of a story. But I've actually been doing less of this recently. And I have survived (so have my characters).

4.) Unless I'm so into a book that I pick it up at every free moment that I have, I prefer to read when I have a big chuck of time ahead of me (at least an hour is preferable).

5.) I get very emotionally involved in my characters' lives. I've been known to not be able to sleep if I have to stop reading in the middle of an intense plot line, and to waking up feeling very anxious. Or to getting agitated with whomever is interrupting me at a crucial moment (I have to remind myself that what's going on around me has nothing to do with book world.). The more emotionally involved I am in a story, the faster I read it.

6.) I prefer to read one book at a time. I don't like to cloud my brain with multiple story lines.

7.) I generally don't like love triangles, books with a lot of flash backs or parallel story lines (i.e. switching back and forth between two completely separate stories). But I have found books that I love with all of these features.

8.) I almost always finish a book if I'd started it. I think I could count on one hand the number of books or series that I have DNF'd. But for the ones that I've determined that I won't be reading, I've often looked up online to see what happened later in the books.

9.) About the time I was in my Boxcar Children reading phase as a child, my mom started making me insert classics or "worthwhile books" into my personal reading. Thus I still feel guilty if I read too many fun books without adding a classic in the mix.

10.) Many of my standard reading habits have changed since I became a blogger. I've read multiple books at a time, I participated in a read-along where I read a book slowly over a few weeks, I've broken up the reading of book series, and I haven't read an official classic this year. Although that doesn't mean I haven't discovered a new classic. Time will tell.

  1. I have the SAME problem with bookmarks! It's like they're testing me! I almost told my roommate to shut up today when he started talking to me..I need one of those dust jackets that says "Don't talk to me - I'm reading"! And I've always had an issue with not finishing books until recently; I finally told myself that if it's killing my reading life, I'm not finishing it and that's okay. :) Great list, Lauren!

  2. I'm so with you on 1-6 it's a little creepy. Sometimes I have to call my sister and vent about the drama of the characters as if it's gossip about real people we know haha. Great list!

  3. I'm nodding my head at so many of these. It's interesting how our reading habits change when we start blogging, isn't it? Love the title of your topic too!

  4. I'd been a one book at a time girl all my life, but recently I've been becoming a little "promiscuous"- one nonfiction book and one at a novel at a time. I feel so dirty.

  5. Same here with bookmarks - I can NEVER find one when I need it - but it'll turn up days later. I prefer to read all the books in a series together too, but usually this doesn't happen.

  6. Thank you for sharing these! :) I have to say that I usually buy the first book and then forget the series. I know! So I have still a lot of series to finish! But, my new rule is to get the first and second book (and the third, if it's already published!) and read them after each other. ;)

  7. I get very involved with characters in a book too. Even to the point where my feelings are mixed with the character :') I also prefer to read series in one chuck, so you really get to bond. Only sometimes there are series I will split, because I don't feel like it. Great list!

  8. Oh I do the same thing as far as emotional involvement with characters go. There are books when I don't sleep well for days because I'm just a bundle of anxiety--which of course is part of the reason I also like to read my series all at once--so that I don't experience random sleepless nights while waiting for the next book!

  9. I always get emotionally involved with characters. I will sometimes stay up until 2am trying to find out what will happen next. I also lose all my bookmarks. I think there is a bookmark gnome out there.

  10. I'm the same way with bookmarks! I usually keep 2-3 extras on my bedside stacked up too...and can never find them when mine goes missing!

Definitely agree with Twilight saga too...I did the same thing (only mine was spaced out a bit more..I read books 1-3 before Breaking Dawn was out.)

  11. I LOVE Confession #2! You're so incredibly brave to admit to that! I really liked Twilight and I even bought the movie and STILL watch it sometimes because I find it so funny, but when I first bought it I genuinely loved it. Once I read New Moon though, I despised the series, but Twilight wasn't bad when I first picked it up. I doubt I'd enjoy it now though, but it's funny how that was the book that introduced so many readers into YA. Lovely confessions, dear! I am spot on with 3, 4, 7, 8, and 10, although I've started DNFing books now that I blog and sometimes get too fed up with the story to continue when I have so many incredible novels in my TBR...thankfully I never feel like I'm missing out on much, but usually I prefer finishing books too. I looove this list, Lauren! :D

  12. I was EXACTLY the same way with Twilight. Just consumed them in order. But once I actually thought about them realized how annoying Bella is (and really how crazy super controlling Edward would drive me).

  13. I'm with you on 3, 5, and 6.

I still rarely read multiple books at once, but it does happen, especially if I'm having trouble getting into a particular book - then I'll set it aside for a while and try something else.

#3 occasionally gets me in trouble because I think it can make me kind of burn out on a series I might otherwise have loved. I bought all of the Vampire Academy books at once and devoured the first several in like 3 days... but then I never finished the last book. I'm convinced I just overdid it on the series, too much too fast.

Then again I read all three THG in two days and I adore those, and I've since reread them. So who knows!

If the books are available, I don't have the patience to space them out!

  14. Oh, and I had the same experience with Twilight. No shame here!

  15. Hahaha I get waaaaay to invested in fictional characters too. Don't worry, you're not the only one! :)

  16. We seem to have a number of similar reading habits. I am the exact same way with series - I will consume them in a row as long as that's possible. Although if they're long or feature lengthier books sometimes focusing solely on that series makes me a little stir-crazy. I also read only one book at a time, and I plan on intermixing classics into my lists as well. Great confessions!

  18. Lauren! Your reading habit is so similar to mine~ :DDD

  19. I read the entire Twilight series over four days off, and adored every minute (I read them in bed, with a huge box of Christmas chocolates, it was fantastic) - HOWEVER, I haven't re-read them since. I'm almost not sure I want to in case it kills the magic. I had a 'phase' in childhood too, only mine was an addiction to Nancy Drew novels. As I filled up reading card after reading card with her adventures, my teacher had to quietly remind me that there were, in fact, other books out there, and that maybe I should mix things up a bit. Like you, that's a habit that's stuck, and I'm actually quite pleased about it! :)

  20. What a fun list, Lauren! Hey, you are not alone in the Twilight department. No, it's not a popular stance these days, but I will stand with you and freely admit that I loved those books (though Breaking Dawn is my least fave) and yes, they ABSOLUTELY got me reading again and reading YA. They also turned me on to Cassandra Clare, Suzanne Collins, Holly Black and Melissa Marr (just to name a few)and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have started a blog had I not gotten into reading like I did. Do I still think they are all that? No, I've read MUCH better books since, but it would be a lie if I didn't give that series it's due:)

And I love the one about your mom slipping in the classics and how you feel guilty even today if you aren't reading something like that in between the "fun" reads! Ah, a mother's guilt is a powerful weapon indeed!

  21. Okay, I sent you a very long comment about this. It was too long to put up here on your blog. I love this post so much.
