Top Ten Books Dealing With Tough Subjects

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke & The Bookish

Top Ten Books Dealing With Tough Subjects

I realize that I tend to list the same few books over and over again, so I purposefully tried to include ones that I haven't talked about a lot - or at all. All of the books I chose below affected me strongly.

Spoiler warning: Some of the subjects in these books are self explanatory, but some of the specific issues could be a spoiler if you haven't read the book yet. I made the title big and put the issues under that, and typed very small the issue, so it's easily skipped over.

1) Sold by Patricia McCormick

Child slavery/prostitution

2) Hopeless by Colleen Hoover

Suicide, child molestation

3) Me Before You by JoJo Moyes

quadriplegia, physician assisted suicide

4) What Happens Next by Colleen Clayton

Date rape, eating disorders

5)  Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell

Child abuse

6) You Against Me by Jenny Downham

Rape, including a trial

7) North Of Beautiful by Justina Chen

MC has a large birthmark on her cheek: explores beauty and self worth.

8) Small Damages by Beth Kephart

Teen pregnancy

9) Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta

Depression

10) Lovely, Dark and Deep by Amy McNamara

grief, multiple sclerosis

Three Recent Reads:

The Book of Broken Hearts by Sarah Ockler - early onset Alzheimer's
Wild Awake by Hillary T. Smith - mental illness (hypomania, schizophrenia)
Vain by Fisher Amelie - Children/families affected by Joseph Kony's rule in Africa.

  2. I loved Saving Francesca and Eleanor & Park, hope you did too, they did really great jobs of handling tough issues while keeping the characters relatable and having many funny moments. My TTT :)

  3. What Happens Next, You Against Me, Small Damages, Saving Francesca, and North of Beautiful are some of my favorites. I know the reason I stopped TTT was because it got repetitive with all the books I used, but you did a great job expanding with this list. I'll have to read a couple of these soon. (:

  5. I've seen Sold about every time I walk into a book store, I keep seeing it as a sign to buy it but it never happens. Other than that one I haven't heard of any of them, I'll have to look into some of them. Great list.

  8. This is such a great list, Lauren--I haven't read most of them, so it's good to see your opinion for potential adds to the TBR list.

Funnily enough, I'm one of the few people who didn't like North of Beautiful, hah. But I'm seeing it on a ton of lists today.

  9. All this talk about Eleanor and Park, and I had no idea it was a tough subject book. For some reason that makes me want to read it more.

    Great list!

  10. Great list! I feel like I've read/want to read all of these. I really wanted to put Hopeless on my list, but I wasn't sure about spoilers, I should have just done it, it's pretty obvious it's a serious issue book.

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

  14. I have Eleanor and Park on my TBR list. I will have to see if any of the others would be a good fit. I don't really do issue books, but there are some I'm cool with.

  16. I've only read 2, 4 & 5 on your list, but the others sound every bit as good. I only just read On the Jellicoe Road, and I am now a Marchetta fan. I'm just not sure which one to read next!

  17. I looked at your list on Tuesday, but realized I forgot to comment! So I'm just letting you know that I have What Happens Next in my library book pile and I'm dying to read Eleanor & Park as well as some of the others you listed :) Also, I'm insanely happy that you love There You'll Find Me as well since no one seems to have heard of it (in reference to the one on my list;)
